PSU welcomes new president


President Shoureshi First Day   WEA member Portland State University has welcomed its ninth president to campus.
   Rahmat Shoureshi, pronounced  "Shoe-re-she," started in his new role this week.
   Shoureshi by training is a mechanical engineer.
  He has a master's and doctorate degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. 
   He also holds nine U.S. patents for biomedical and engineering systems, sensors and devices, and has authored more than 250 technical publications. 
   Shoureshi said PSU's commitment to diversity, civic engagement, and innovation are what made him want to join the university.
   He was the provost and interim president of the New York Institute of Technology.
   "Portland State is a great university, and together we can make it a global urban university that will be a role model for expanding civic engagement and its economic impact on the city and the state," Shoureshi said.
