Labor seems to be biggest challenge for construction industry
WEA members and guests gathered this week to hear about construction on the Westside.
Moderator Rick Wessell from Touchmark, Day CPM's Mike Day, WHPacific's Tom Jones, and Andersen Construction's Joel Andersen talked about the issues surrounding the construction industry.
One challenge that became apparent during the panel discussion was labor and the perception of going into the trades.
Andersen said he talked with a group of students, who seemed to love their shop class, but said they weren't considering a career in the trades.
Instead, they were planning to go to college, even though they had no idea what they were going to study.
Day said he is looking for ways to influence and attract younger workers to the industry.
There was also discussion on how to attract more diversity to the construction industry.
The panel agreed the Portland metro area is a hot market and is attracting the younger generation.
Andersen said, "It turns out our rain is actually cool."
Other topics of discussion included innovation with cross-laminated timber (CLT) and the use of prefabrication in construction.
