Pac/West's Newgard provides a legislative update for GRC
WEA's Government Relations Committee (GRC) joined Pac/West's Jeff Newgard earlier this summer to talk about the Oregon State Legislature's 2019 session.
Newgard said the legislators were busy, and at this point, they had two weeks left in the session - it was obvious there was some exhaustion.
The Legislature has taken on issues around rent control, medicaid funding, gross receipts tax and school funding, PERS reform, housing, justice reform, family leave, cap and trade, and more.
Newgard said the Legislature started earlier this year than normal with an end date of June 30, but they didn't take into account that the revenue forecasts, shaping the state budget, still came out in May.
This left lawmakers with about two weeks to pass a mandated budget after state economists released their budget forecasts.
Other issues the WEA Government Relations Committee is considering for future discussion include 5G, the potential regional transportation bond, and homelessness.
